Santiago’s was born in downtown Hammond in November 2016 and was in the planning stages long before that. In reality, Santiago’s has been a dream in the making for over 20 years. It has been in the blood of ownership to bring delicious and authentic Cuban cuisine to South Louisiana. Roots to Santiago’s go back to almost the beginning of Cuba’s history where the family’s first hotel and restaurant, La Dominica , helped house and feed many of Cuba’s first revolutionary heros against Spain in the late 1800’s during the Cuban War of independence. One of those generals was Antonio Maceo who was from Santiago, Cuba. La Dominica restaurant was the first to raise the present day flag of Cuba, and for it, sits on Cuba’s Interior Ministry of National Historical Sites.
Santiago’s offers an assortment of authentic Cuban sandwiches that are made with real Cuban bread along with a delicious bevy of appetizers and entrees indigenous to the Caribbean island cuisine. Cuban cuisine is very similar to Cajun creole cuisine we enjoy in South Louisiana. Spiced pork, beef, chicken and seafood accompanied by black beans and rice in lieu of red bean and rice, but with similar great flavor that we are used to in South Louisiana.
Cuba has always been known for rum, sugar and cigars. At Santiago’s you can find all the finest rums, cigars and sweet dessert dishes being prepared by local chef Wes Crum along with his twists on traditional Cuban dishes with a local flavor. The bar features a specialty rum cocktail menu that is run by local bar mixologists. All this is being served in a great atmosphere, in a beautiful downtown building that looks like you have stepped back in time to La Dominica in Cuba filled with great music and art from local artists and musicians. Santiago’s is presently open 6 days a week in beautiful and historic downtown Hammond at 207 East Thomas Street.
The culinary experience is met with a lively atmosphere with live music and Cuban art from local artists and musicians. Santiago’s is open M-Th 11am-9pm, Fri-Sat 11am-10pm, and Sundays for a Cuban Jazz brunch from 11am-2pm. Located near Southeastern Louisiana University, Santiago’s is at 207 East Thomas Blvd in the heart of historic downtown Hammond.
In addition to Santiago’s Cuban Bar & Grill, we also operate offer a food truck for location catering and events.
